The Asian Pacific Islander Workgroup Presents: Why Asian Families Say No To Organ and Tissue Donation Presented in Partnership with the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT) Thursday, May 12, 2022 | 1:00pm - 2:00pm ET | 10:00am - 11:00am PT

Understanding the Asian diaspora is complex. This webinar aims to provide deeper knowledge of the thought process of an Asian family regarding grave prognosis and organ donation. In this one-hour webinar, our speakers will address ethical practices surrounding organ donation, nontraditional medicine, and how it affects the body, non-verbal communication, family structure, and community outreach in Asian communities.

By the end of this webinar, the learner will be able to:

  • Verbalize donation practices among the Asian community and how it affects westernized organ donation.
  • Understand how nontraditional medicine can affect the clinical status of a potential organ donor.
  • Recognize forms of non-verbal communication within Asian families.
  • Develop culturally sensitive approaches to communicate better with families of Asian origin.
  • Identify opportunities to promote organ and tissue donation among the Asian community.

Presenters:

  • Jeremy Yau, Community Outreach Coordinator, LiveOnNY
  • Jeffrey Chao, Director of Organ Operations, Donor Network West
  • Sun Yen Cumby, Donor Wife
  • My-Hoa Le, Medical Language Interpreter, Stanford University Hospital
